Payday Loans on Weekends: Saturday, Sunday and Holiday Rules in Canada

Payday loans on weekends, man applying on his phone with coffee on a Saturday morning at home

Payday loans on weekends are legal and work in every province that licenses payday lenders. You can apply, verify your income and sign on a Saturday or Sunday, and the price is the same capped $14 per $100 as on a Tuesday. Three things do change: when the money arrives, when your free cancellation window closes, and what happens if your repayment date lands on a weekend or a bank holiday. This guide covers all three with dates and dollar figures.

The short answer: apply in the morning, turn on Interac Auto Deposit, and count your cancellation right in business days, not calendar days. A $300 loan costs $42 on any day of the week. If your payday falls on a holiday Monday, check whether your pay lands the Friday before or the Tuesday after, because the lender’s debit follows the bank calendar too.

What works on a weekend and what waits for Monday?

Everything you do yourself works on a weekend. Everything that moves money through the banks’ clearing system waits for a business day. That split explains almost every weekend surprise borrowers run into.

StepSaturday and SundayWho sets the timing

The lender’s pre-authorized debit for repaymentDoes not settle; processes on a business dayThe payment system calendar and your agreement

So the first half of payday loans on weekends works the same on Saturday night as on Tuesday at noon, with no extra weekend documents. The second half, money moving in and out of your account, is where the calendar matters.

When does weekend money arrive?

Weekend money arrives when your lender’s funding desk sends the e-Transfer, and that depends on the lender’s hours, not on Interac. Lenders set their own cutoffs, so the same approval can land Saturday afternoon with one lender and Monday morning with another. These are typical outcomes, assuming approval and a signed agreement:

You finish and signTypical arrivalWhy
Saturday, 9:00 amSaturday afternoonWell inside most lenders’ Saturday funding hours
Saturday, 10:00 pmSunday morning or MondayAfter most Saturday cutoffs
Sunday, 9:00 amSunday, if the lender funds Sundays; otherwise Monday morningSunday funding varies the most
Sunday, 10:00 pmMonday morningQueued for the next funding run
Holiday Monday, eveningTuesday morningReduced holiday staffing

Two settings matter more than the day. Turn on Interac Auto Deposit, so the transfer lands without a security question, and put the email or phone number registered with your bank on the application. The e-transfer payday loans page covers the transfer itself.

Does a weekend payday loan cost more?

No. A payday loan costs at most $14 per $100 borrowed, all fees included, on every day of the week. That ceiling comes from the federal Criminal Interest Rate Regulations, in force since January 1, 2025, and a licensed lender cannot add a weekend fee, a Sunday fee or a delivery fee on top of it.

BorrowMost it can costTotal to repay
$100$14$114
$300$42$342
$500$70$570
$1,000$140$1,140
$1,500$210$1,710

The dollar fee does not shrink when the loan is shorter. That matters on a weekend, because a loan signed Saturday against a Friday payday runs only six days. Here is the same $300 loan signed on Saturday, October 10, 2026, with three different due dates:

Due dateDays borrowedFeeAPR
Friday, October 16 (next payday)6$42about 852%
Friday, October 23 (payday after next, weekly pay)13$42about 393%
Saturday, October 24 (a 14-day term)14$42about 365%

You pay $42 in every row; the shorter loan only costs more per day. If your next payday is a few days away and that cheque is already spoken for, ask whether the due date can be the following payday. Our guide to payday loan costs in Canada compares the fee with other credit, and the $300 payday loan page works through that amount in full.

A payday loan is high-cost credit even at the capped price. It fits a one-time gap before payday. If the same shortfall comes back every month, read our guide to payday loan debt help before you borrow again.

When does your cancellation window close if you sign on a weekend?

Every province that licenses payday lenders lets you cancel a new loan for free, but a weekend signing can make that window shorter than you expect. Some provinces count the days the lender is open, some count hours and skip only Sundays, and one counts straight hours. We read each province’s payday law on October 6, 2026. Here is the safe deadline for a loan signed on Saturday at 2:00 pm, with the money received that day and no holiday that week:

ProvinceHow the window is countedSigned Saturday 2:00 pm: cancel by
AlbertaEnd of the 2nd day after you get your copy of the agreement, if the lender is open that dayEnd of Monday
British ColumbiaEnd of the 2nd day the lender is open after the first advanceEnd of Monday if the lender opens Sunday; end of Tuesday if it does not
Manitoba48 hours after the advance, not counting Sundays and holidays (Saturday counts)Tuesday, 2:00 pm
New Brunswick48 hours after the advance, not counting Sundays and holidaysTuesday, 2:00 pm
Newfoundland and LabradorEnd of the 2nd day after you get your copy, if the lender is open that dayEnd of Monday
Nova Scotia, online loan48 hours after the advance, Sundays includedMonday, 2:00 pm
Nova Scotia, store loanEnd of the business day after the advanceEnd of Monday
OntarioEnd of the 2nd day after the lender gives you the agreement and the money, if it is open that dayEnd of Monday
Prince Edward IslandEnd of the 2nd day after the lender gives you the agreement and the money, if it is open that dayEnd of Monday
SaskatchewanEnd of the next day the lender is open after you signEnd of Sunday if the lender opens Sunday; end of Monday if it does not

Two things move these deadlines. If the lender sends the money on Monday instead of Saturday, the clock starts later in British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, where it runs from the advance. And a deadline that lands on a Sunday or a holiday generally moves to the next day that is not one. A Manitoba loan signed Friday, October 9, 2026 at 6:00 pm runs to Tuesday, October 13 at 6:00 pm, because Sunday and Thanksgiving Monday do not count.

Ontario’s agreement and the province’s payday loan rights page describe the window as two business days, while the Act counts days the lender is open. Your agreement must print the exact deadline, so go by the earliest time it shows. Manitoba explains its 48-hour rule on the Consumer Protection Office site, and Saskatchewan’s regulator sets out how to cancel a payday loan. To cancel, you return the money and the lender refunds any charges it took.

What if your repayment date lands on a weekend or holiday?

Your repayment comes out of your account by pre-authorized debit, and debits only settle on days the payment system is open. Payments Canada says its systems run Monday to Friday except statutory holidays. Payroll deposits follow the same calendar. Here are the closure days left in 2026:

HolidayPayment system closedWhat it means for a payday loan
ThanksgivingMonday, October 12A Monday payday usually moves to Friday, October 9 or Tuesday, October 13; check which with your employer
Remembrance DayWednesday, November 11Closed even in provinces where it is not a day off work
Christmas DayFriday, December 25A Friday payday often lands Thursday, December 24
Boxing DayMonday, December 28 (the holiday falls on Saturday, December 26)Four days in a row with no debits or payroll: Friday to Monday

Family Day, the August civic holiday and Easter Monday are not closure days, so payments move as usual on them. Payments Canada had not posted its 2027 schedule when we checked on October 6, 2026.

The risk is a mismatch. If your pay lands a day late after a holiday but the lender’s debit runs on the original date, the debit can bounce, and you pay a lender default fee plus your bank’s NSF fee. When you sign, find the payment date in the agreement and compare it with the day your pay actually arrives in the month you borrow. Ask for a different due date before you sign, not after.

Payments Canada’s Rule H1 does not say a debit due on a holiday must move to the next business day; your agreement decides that. The rule does protect you in two ways. A payee must give you at least 10 days’ notice before changing the amount or date of a debit, and if a debit is not drawn the way your agreement says, you have 90 days to ask your bank to reverse it. If you cannot pay, call the lender before the due date; our guide to payday loan debt help covers payment plans.

How do weekends work with an Alberta payday loan?

An Alberta payday loan runs 42 to 62 days and is repaid in instalments that fall on your paydays, so a weekend signing changes less there than anywhere else. A $500 loan costs at most $70 over the whole term and is repaid in at least two instalments, for example three payments of $190 on three bi-weekly paydays. Instalments cannot differ from each other by more than $10, and a bounced payment can cost you at most $25 in lender fees. The province sets the rules out on alberta.ca.

For Albertans the weekend point is the instalment dates: if a payday falls on a holiday Monday, set each debit for the day your pay actually lands, and check the schedule before you sign. Our payday loans Canada page shows the full Alberta schedule and every province’s rules side by side.

Are payday loan stores open on weekends?

Some storefronts open Saturdays and a few open Sundays, usually on shorter hours that differ by branch, so call ahead. In a store the same $14 per $100 cap and provincial rules apply, and you leave with the money if approved.

Online, the application never closes but the transfer follows the lender’s hours. In Nova Scotia the cancellation window also differs between store and online loans, as the table above shows.

Which weekend offers are scams?

Weekend urgency is what scammers count on. Three patterns show up most often on Saturday nights:

  • The upfront fee. Someone asks for an e-Transfer, a gift card or crypto to “release” your loan. A licensed lender never asks you to pay first.
  • A promise of approval before anyone sees your income. Licensed lenders check your pay before lending.
  • No licence number. Ask for the provincial licence number and check it with the regulator listed on our payday loans Canada page.

Lenders offering payday loans to people in Quebec, Yukon, the Northwest Territories or Nunavut at $14 per $100 are breaking the law, on weekdays and weekends alike. Our guide to where payday loans are legal in Canada explains why and what you can borrow there instead.

What costs less than a payday loan on a Saturday?

Several cheaper options work on a weekend from your banking app, so check them before you apply:

  • An overdraft or line of credit you already have. Both usually cost far less than $14 per $100 if cleared within weeks.
  • A credit card, paying the repair or bill directly instead of taking cash.
  • A payment arrangement with the utility or phone company you owe, often set up online.
  • An employer pay advance. Often free, though you will usually have to ask on Monday.

If none of those works and the cost cannot wait until Monday, a licensed payday loan at the capped price is the next step. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada publishes the same checklist.

What should you have ready before Friday?

Ten minutes of setup on a weekday makes payday loans on weekends work the way this guide describes:

  • Online banking login for the IBV check. It is read-only and the lender never sees your password.
  • Interac Auto Deposit switched on, with the email or phone number you will put on the application.
  • Your pay schedule and next two paydays, so you can pick a due date the cheque can cover.
  • Steady employment income: full-time or part-time pay deposited to your account.

How matching works on a weekend

Get Payday Loans Canada is a free matching service, not a lender. One application goes to a lender licensed in your province, checking your options does not affect your credit score, and you can decline any offer. Payday loans on weekends FAQs

Can I get a payday loan on a Saturday in Canada?

Yes. You can apply, verify your income and sign on a Saturday in every province that licenses payday lenders. Money usually arrives that afternoon if you sign early, before the lender’s Saturday funding cutoff.

Do payday lenders send money on Sunday?

Some do and some do not. Sunday funding varies the most from lender to lender. A Sunday evening approval is usually sent Monday morning.

Do payday loans on weekends cost more?

No. A payday loan costs at most $14 per $100 borrowed on every day of the week, and a licensed lender cannot add a weekend fee. A $300 loan costs at most $42.

Can I cancel a payday loan I signed on the weekend?

Yes, but the window can be short. For a loan signed Saturday afternoon, most provinces let you cancel until the end of Monday; Manitoba and New Brunswick run to Tuesday afternoon, and a Nova Scotia online loan ends Monday afternoon. Your agreement must print the exact deadline.

What happens if my payday loan is due on a holiday?

Debits do not settle on payment system closure days, and your agreement says which day the debit moves to. Compare it with the day your pay actually lands, and ask for a different due date before you sign if they do not match.

Which days can payments not go through for the rest of 2026?

Weekends, plus Thanksgiving on October 12, Remembrance Day on November 11, Christmas on December 25 and Monday, December 28 for Boxing Day, according to Payments Canada’s closure schedule.

Are payday loan stores open on weekends?

Some open Saturdays and a few open Sundays, usually on shorter hours that vary by branch. The same $14 per $100 cap and provincial rules apply in a store.

Can I get a payday loan on a weekend in Quebec or the territories?

No. Quebec, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut have not designated payday lending, so a loan above the 35% criminal interest rate is illegal there on any day. You can still apply here for a loan priced at or under 35% APR.
